Free vocal, piano concert planned for March 1; other lifestyle news


Voice/piano concert

A free voice and piano concert entitled “Russian Romance” will be presented at 2 p.m. March 1 by Lorna B. Case (soprano) and Dr. Barbara Bacik Case (pianist/organist/teacher). The concert will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sherman and is open to the public.

Lorna Case recently successfully competed in the Altamura Caruso International Verdi Vocal Competition in New York City. She is currently training to sing Wagnerian opera roles with Dr. Jeffrey Schneider at the University of North Texas.

The Sherman concert will include Russian songs and arias by Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Rimsky-Korsakov and Dvorak (Czech aria). There will be translations and explanations as to the meanings of the songs before they are performed.

Sargent wins

SAN ANTONIO — Harley Sargent of Denison exhibited the champion Limousin heifer on Feb. 14 in the Supreme Champion Heifer Drive of the San Antonio Livestock Show &Rodeo. As one of 17 breed champions, she earned a $10,000 scholarship.

Sargent is a member of the Grayson County 4-H program. In addition to working with show cattle, she enjoys playing basketball, volleyball and softball and plans to attend Texas A&M University to pursue a degree in agriculture.
