Nabors — 70th

Al and Wilma Nabors of Denison were honored Saturday with a 70th wedding anniversary reception. The celebration was held at Waples Memorial United Methodist Church in Denison.

The Nabors were married on May 1, 1943 in a double wedding ceremony with Wilma Nabors’ sister, Bernice, and her husband, Lyndol Irby. The ceremony was held in the flower garden at the brides’ parents’ home. The Irbys also reside in Denison and are celebrating their 70th anniversary this week.

Wilma Nabors is the daughter of the late Bill and Olga Parrish. She attended Gordonville School, graduated from Whitesboro High School and attended North Texas Business College. She worked as a secretary at Shipp Motor Company in Sherman for several years. In addition to being a housewife and mother, she enjoyed volunteering at her daughters’ school and church activities.

Al Nabors is the son of the late Otto and Faye Nabors. He attended schools in Mangum, Oklahoma, Dexter and Gordonville and served in the United States Air Force, stationed at Perrin Field Air Force Base. He worked as a parts salesman for Schoelkoph Company before joining Line Material Company where he worked for 21 years before retiring. From 1972 until 1983, he worked in the car shop for MK&T Railroad. He now enjoys working in his shop at his home.

Both are active members of Waples Memorial United Methodist Church and especially enjoy cooking for church breakfasts. Both also enjoy gardening, home and workshop projects, spending time with family and friends, music, the theatre and occasional camping experiences with the Merry Mobile Methodists of the North Texas United Methodist Conference of which they are long-time members. They are also members of the Degree of Honor Lodge and have held many offices in that organization.

The Naborses children are Sandy Barnes and her husband, Harry, of Austin and Debra Storie and her husband, Bobby, of Garland. There are four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
