VFW Post 2773

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2773 in Denison will hold a special Pearl Harbor Day remembrance program this Friday. The program will begin at 5 p.m. and speaking will be Charles Rister, post commander. It will be open to the public.

On Jan. 26, the post will host a special noon ceremony honoring the Vietnam Peace Corps. All persons involved in this service are encouraged to attend. They will receive special recognition and a commemorative token.

Grayson County Retired School Personnel Association

The Grayson County Retired School Personnel Association will meet on Dec. 11 at Grandy’s Restaurant in Sherman. A Dutch treat luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m., and the program and business meeting begins at 12:30 p.m.

This month’s musical program, entitled “Joyful Sounds of Christmas,” will be presented by the Children’s Choir of Greater North Texas. The group is under the direction of Susan Matthews.

Members will need to submit at this meeting their community service volunteer hours for 2012. Also, the Grayson County Child Protective Services will pick up the school supplies, toys and books the group has collected during the year. Margaret McCord will collect books for the book project and give a report on the number collected throughout the year.

The District X Texas Retired Teachers Association convention was recently held in Dallas. Attending from ths local group were JoEtta Penn, Dorothy Lee and Linda Vandergriff-Thoms. Lee serves as the district’s secretary, and the meeting covered legislative issues affecting retired school personnel.

In February, the group will meet on the 13th. Meetings are open to all retired school personnel and guests. For more information, call 903-893-5795.

Denison Elks Lodge

The Denison Elks Lodge held its annual Elks Memorial Day Service on Dec. 2. Exalted Ruler Gene Handeland gave the opening speech and the “Eleven O’Clock Toast” to absent members.

The opening and closing statements were given by Chaplain Robert “Bob” Watts. Leading Knight Dick Williams, Loyal Knight Eugene Sanford, and Lecturing Knight James “Jamie” Branch presented offerings to the lodge’s departed members. They included Jerry Howard, Loretta Barnett, Boyd Campbell, Harry Kendall, Jack Rawlins, Gene Fritts, Billy Miller, Roger Lanteigne, Mary Pellman, Andrew Tolnay and William “Hoyt” Pilkilton.

Retired County Judge Horace Groff was this year’s keynote speaker. Debra Hiner, vocalist, performed two songs, accompanied by Dorothy Brinkman, pianist.
