Texas Department of Public Safety State Trooper David Taylor said that an accident Tuesday morning on Highway 82 West sent one woman to a hospital by helicopter. The woman’s 6-year-old son was also in the minivan, but he was unharmed.
The white minivan collided with the rear end of an 18-wheeler on the highway around 10 a.m., completely crushing the entire front end of the van. The woman was rescued from the grisly wreck by Sherman Fire Department’s Technical Rescue Team. A Sherman FD ambulance took the injured driver to an improvised helicopter landing space near the highway. From there, she was airlifted to a Plano hospital while in stable condition.
Taylor said the accident happened when the driver of the 18-wheeler slowed down to make a right turn. Police shut the highway down for about an hour and a half to safely rescue the woman and child, and then clean debris off of the roadway. The driver of the 18-wheeler was not injured.
