The New Year’s Resolution You Will Want to Keep (It’s not too late!): Mentor a Child.
January was National Mentoring Month, as well as the month to make New Year’s resolutions. It is not too late to make your resolution this year! Become a mentor. Just a few hours a couple of times a month can make a big difference in a child’s life.
I am a school counselor and it is very evident in our community, there are too few young people that have a caring adult mentor to provide encouragement and support. The Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) mentoring program can provide the link to this support, however programs like this need volunteers to close the gap. Decide to mentor a child, and have a great and rewarding new year. It is definitely a resolution you will want to keep!
In 2012, the Grayson County BBBS office served more children than ever before but still has a growing waiting list of children. There are currently 30 children waiting for their Big Brother or Big Sister. BBBS is a volunteer organization that provides children (ages 6 to 14) support, guidance, friendship and fun by matching them to adult role models. Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) is actively recruiting mentors. There is a great need for male mentors as well as females. There are even programs where a couple or family can get involved.
I am a Big Sister to a wonderful Little Sister. I can honestly say that becoming a Big Sister has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. It is so rewarding to feel so needed in her life. She has given more to me than she will ever know. It is a win-win situation. PLEASE consider becoming a “Big” and you too can feel the joy! Now is the time to make a difference!
