GUNTER — Season upon season of success at Gunter has put in perspective where the ultimate goal lies.
“We worked hard and it was nice to win another district title again,” junior guard Reagan Hestand said. “I was sad we didn’t get farther than we did but we came across a really good team.”
One of the reasons the Lady Tigers were so successful in capturing another district crown was Hestand, who is the Herald Democrat All-Texomaland Girls Basketball Player of the Year for the 2012-13 season.
Hestand averaged 14.5 points, eight rebounds, 4.9 assists and 3.8 steals, which was up from 11.7 points, six rebounds and 2.5 assists and steals as a sophomore.
“I think it was expected this year to step up. When I was MVP of the district last year, I knew I had to step up,” Hestand said. “I did step up my scoring some.”
Hestand repeated with top district honors and was a Texas Asociation of Basketball Coaches all-region selection.
Gunter went 24-9 with an undefeated 12-2A run before an area-round loss.
The Lady Tigers struggled at the beginning of the season — losing six of their first eight — as they worked in new faces but came together at the right time. “As the season went on our skills got better. We became stronger as a team,” Hestand said. “I still tried to encourage my team, help us get better.”
