The Battle of the Ax between Sherman and Denison is among one of three Texas high school football rivalries that are finalists in USA Today’s competition to find the nation’s best rivalry.
The USA Today competition pits three state finalists against each other. The other two rivalries up for a vote are Longview vs. Marshall and Odessa Permian vs. Midland Lee. Fans can vote online at http://contest.usatodayhss.com/vote/tx .
The 51 state winners (including the District of Columbia) will be divided into four regions. The four regional winners will advance to the final round. The national winner will get $10,000 to be divided between the schools, a traveling trophy kept each year by the school’s winning team, and USA Today will report live from next year’s rivalry game.
The Sherman-Denison rivalry is the oldest in Texas, starting in 1901. Since 1949, the Ax has been awarded yearly to the winner between the two schools.
