UIL approves 3A postseason changes

The University Interscholastic League Legislative Council has approved several rule changes, including the addition of a fourth playoff team in Class 3A and 2A in all team sports that will take effect for the 2013-14 academic year.

The UIL is expected to split what is currently known as Class 3A football into separate divisions during the 2014 realignment after superintendents voted for the change. The decision will be announced today. The setup will be as currently done in 1A and 2A. The realignment next February will include the creation of six classifications, but is just a change in name starting with six-man becoming Class 1A and the current 5A being known as 6A.

Non-district schedules for all sports will see a dramatic change as there will be a reduction by one of tournaments that a team can participate to either two or one depending on the number of games scheduled.

The UIL has also created a Class 3A in both soccer and team tennis that will begin with the 2014 realignment and will allow four teams to advance from district play to the playoffs in team tennis starting in the fall.
