By the time the playoffs had ended, 7-2A (II) might just have proven itself as one of the toughest districts in the state.
Shane Fletcher’s Leonard Tigers and Garrett Patterson’s S&S Rams came up with historic seasons for the program as part of that group, which saw Gunter on the verge of joining them in the fourth round.
Leonard, which hadn’t won a playoff game since 1986, tied for second but had the third seed in the playoffs and made the state semifinals for the first time and finished at 11-4 with a loss to eventual state champ Cisco.
S&S went undefeated in the regular season for the first time, capturing the district title for the first time and then reached the region semifinals for a first time, where it was beaten in a re-match against Leonard for its only loss to close at 12-1.
While it was Patterson who got the nod in the district as the Coach of the year, both he and Fletcher’s accomplishments in 2013 led them to share the Herald Democrat All-Texomaland Class 1A-2A Coach of the Year honors.
