Girls Basketball Roundup — Sherman opens Holiday Tournament with pair of ‘W’s’


Sa’Liesha Hunter scored a combined 57 points as Sherman’s girls opened pool play with a pair of wins in the Sherman Holiday Invitational on Thursday at Bearcat Gymnasium.

The Lady Bearcats (7-8) closed out the day’s action with a 55-44 win against North Lamar. Hunter finished with 27 points and Jayzhia Softly added 10 as the Lady Cats used a 19-10 third period to gain the winning advantage.

Earlier, the Lady Cats got 30 points from Hunter in a 63-52 victory against Howe. J’Lyn Wash added 13 and Dalea Myles 11 for Sherman, while Howe (7-5) was led by 25 points by Riley Harvey and 10 by Darci Foster.

The Lady Cats can win Pool A this afternoon at 2:30 p.m. when they take on McKinney Boyd. The Lady Broncos edged Sherman, 56-52, in their season-opener last month.

Celina 51, Melissa 46

Kynese Davis scored 17 points to lead three Celina players in double-digit scoring against Melissa as the Lady Cats opened 2-0 in Pool B on the opening day of the Sherman Holiday Invitational.

Callie Wells added 12 points and KJ Stastny netted 10 for Celina, which can win the pool by beating Plano at 1 p.m. today.

Katie Webb scored 17 points and Whitney Taylor chipped in 11 for the Lady Cardinals (9-2), who earlier lost to Plano, 59-47. Melissa closes pool play against Lake Highlands at 1 p.m.

The Lady Bobcats (15-3) opened with a 55-34 win against Lake Highlands as Wells scored 18 points.

Leonard Tournament

Leonard 51, Cooper 27

LEONARD – Kimmy Blackburn and Chasity Cummings each scored 13 points as Leonard opened its tournament with a victory against Cooper on Thursday.

Malena Farber, Jasmine Hart and Kirbie Stratton all finished with five points apiece for the Tigerettes.

Pottsboro 37, Pilot Point 30

LEONARD — Justus Malone scored 10 points, leading Pottsboro past Pilot Point in the first round of the Leonard Holiday Tournament.

Lindsey Evans added eight points and three steals for the Lady Cardinals (14-4). Tatum Marburger had seven points and seven rebounds, and Macie O’Hanlon contributed four assists.

Pottsboro will take on Texoma Christian today at 10:50 a.m. in the second round. The winner will advance to a 7 p.m. semifinal.

TCS 50, Pittsburg 43

LEONARD — Hannah Bentsen scored 17 points and Haylie Ross added 16 as Texoma Christian beat Pittsburg in the first round of the Leonard Holiday Tournament.

The Lady Eagles (10-3) jumped in front early, leading 12-6 after one and 28-13 at intermission, then held off a late push by the Lady Pirates.

TCS will take on Pottsboro this morning in the second round.

Dodd City 47, Callisburg 27

LEONARD — Keeshia Thompson scored 17 points as Dodd City defeated Callisburg on the opening day of the Leonard Tournament on Thursday.

Jenna Wallace added 10 points and Lauren Hilliard chipped in eight points for Dodd City, which held Callisburg to one point in the first quarter.

Farmersville 62, Bonham 39

LEONARD — Kala Simpson scored 13 points for Bonham but Farmersville defeated the Lady Warriors to open the Leonard Tournament on Thursday.

Madeline Dolberry finished with 12 points and Erika Porter chipped in nine points for Bonham.

Emory Rains 42, Whitewright 39

LEONARD — Hatty Shope scored 12 points for Whitewright but Emory Rains edged the Lady Tigers to open the Leonard Tournament on Thursday.

Sydney Brummett and Anna Shope each had eight points and Landry Rhoten finished with seven points for Whitewright.

Ector Tournament

Trenton 47, Ector 35

BELLS — Bria Green hit a jumper at the buzzer to lift Trenton past Ector on Thursday in the Ector Tournament.

Green scored 15 points, Jordan Withrow finished with 10 points and Shanna Bennett totaled five points for Trenton, which will take on Boyd at 5 p.m. as tournament play continues.

Kelsee Nelson finished with nine points while Danyelle Huey and Payton Anderson scored six points apiece for Ector, which continues the tournament today against Bells at 11:40 a.m.

Boyd 50, Bells 42

BELLS — Katie Branam had 22 points and seven rebounds for Bells but Boyd defeated the Lady Panthers to open the Ector Tournament on Thursday.

Katie Shults added 10 points, four rebounds and three steals while Macy Sanders chipped in five points, three assists and two rebounds for Bells (11-4), which faces Ector today at 11:40 a.m. as tournament play continues.

Paris Chisum 46, Tom Bean 36

BELLS — Sarah Henderson had 13 points and five rebounds for Tom Bean but Paris Chisum defeated the Lady Tomcats in the Ector Tournament on Thursday.

Katie Jones added 11 points, six assists, six rebounds and five assists, Ramie Byers chipped in eight points and three rebounds and Alex Hendry grabbed six rebounds for Tom Bean, which will take on Blue Ridge today at 9 a.m. in tournament action.

Rivercrest 47, Blue Ridge 17

BELLS — Kendyl White scored seven points for Blue Ridge but Rivercrest defeated the Lady Tigers in the Ector Tournament on Thursday.

Kinzie Garcia chipped in three points for Blue Ridge, which will take on Tom Bean today at 9 a.m.
