Diamond Roundup — Cats win a pair

Behind two strong pitching performances, including a bid for a no-hitter, Sherman notched two victories on the opening day of the Sherman Invitational on Thursday by beating Richardson, 7-2 in six innings, and Granbury, 5-0, at Veterans Field.

Senior ace Case Rolen pitched 5 1/3 no-hit innings against Richardson and struck out 10 batters before being lifted because of a pitch count, and the Eagles broke up the no-no afterward. Freshman center fielder Brayshon Savage drove in two runs for Sherman.

In the second game, another freshman, David Bedgood, was almost as sharp as Rolen, going 6 1/3 innings for the win and allowing only four Granbury singles. Treyson Jones drove in a pair of runs.

Senior catcher Will Olson batted 4-for-6 on the day with a double in each game. Also, Treyson Jones had three combined RBI and Grant Jones had two. The Bearcats committed no errors in either game.

The Bearcats (3-5) will face Lake Dallas at 5 p.m. and Plano John Paul II at 7 p.m. tonight. Lake Dallas is 1-0-1 in the tournament with a 4-3 win over North Lamar and a 2-2 tie with Granbury on Thursday, while John Paul II is 0-2 after run-rule losses to Richardson and North Lamar.
