Softball roundup: Lady Jackets romp


Mady McAlester’s three-run homer came during a 12-run fifth inning as Denison defeated Greenville, 13-4, in District 13-4A action on Tuesday night.

The victory, coupled with Royse City’s loss to Lovejoy, guaranteed the Lady Yellow Jackets no worse than a play-in game for the fourth and final playoff spot.

Bailey Nixon drove in two runs and scored twice, Cassidy McDaris was 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs, Micalah Hunt chipped in two hits and two RBI while Jaydan Hunt scored twice and Monica Eslick had two hits for Denison (15-7-1, 8-5), which closes out the regular season at McKinney North on Friday night.

A victory by the Lady Jackets or a loss by Royse City against district champion Wylie would clinch a playoff spot for Denison.

Wylie 11, Sherman 1 (5)

Serina Saldivar’s home run in the top of the sixth was the punctuation mark on Monday as district leader Wylie handed Sherman an 11-1 loss.

Saldivar finished 2-for-4 with one run and three RBI for Wylie.

Sherman (7-20, 2-11) got its lone run in the bottom of the fifth on Miranda Lleverino’s RBI groundout that drove in Olivia Fair, who finished 2-for-2.

The Lady Cats will close out the season at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at Greenville.

District 12-3A Bonham 15, Community 0 (4)

NEVADA — Sidney Sewell hit a grand slam and pitched a one-hitter as Bonham run-ruled Nevada Community and claimed second place in District 12-3A.

Audra Romans totaled three hits including a double, two RBI and joined Kenzie Rattan, who had two stolen bases, with two runs apiece for Bonham (20-10, 5-3), which will face either Dallas Madison or Wilmer-Hutchins in the bi-district round. Community garnered third place.

Ashton Sutton matched Sewell’s two hits and joined Maggie Hunt with three runs for Bonham, which scored six runs in the first and second innings. Cheyenne Wicker had two RBI and a double.

District 11-2A Howe 15, Bells 5 (6)

BELLS — Madisyn Hargrove was 4-for-5 with three runs and two RBI as Howe clinched third place with a run-rule victory over Bells.

The Lady Bulldogs avoided being part of a potential three-way tie with S&S, Tom Bean and Callisburg and will face the runner-up from 12-2A in the playoffs.

Jada Upchurch was 3-for-5, including two doubles, with four runs and two RBI while Dani Ross and Peyton Tinney drove in two runs and Kayla Anderson and Hunter Brockleman scored twice for Howe (19-9, 8-6).

S&S 4, W’boro 2

WHITESBORO — Paige Porter struck out 18 and led S&S to a win over Whitesboro it needed to stay in the district’s wild playoff chase.

The Lady Rams finished district play at 7-7, joining Tom Bean in a tie for third place. Callisburg can join them with a win in its make-up game against Bells.

Jessika Dyke had two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs while Meagan Cowden doubled and scored, Maisie Stanford had an RBI and Tannah Medrano and Shara Chumley both scored for S&S.

Tom Bean 11, Pottsboro 1 (5)

TOM BEAN — Sarah Henderson, Caroline Henderson, Alex Hendry and Shelly Peterson extended their senior seasons by accounting for nine runs in Tom Bean’s run-rule victory over Pottsboro.

Tom Bean (16-10, 7-7) joins S&S in a tie for third-place that could include Callisburg if the Lady Wildcats win a make-up game against Bells.

Sarah Henderson went 3-for-3 and was a triple shy of the cycle with two RBI for Tom Bean while Annie Bailey went 3-for-3 with a home run and six RBI. Bailey also struck out eight in five innings with just two walks.

District 12-2A Pilot Point 17, Farmersville 0 (5)

FARMERSVILLE — Preslee Gallaway hit a grand slam in the top of an 11-run fifth inning for Pilot Point in a win at Farmersville.

Gallaway finished for Pilot Point (23-5, 11-0) while Natalie Larson and Mercedez Lane each went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI and Xena Barbour was 3-for-4 with one run and drove in three runs for the first-place Lady Bearcats.

Sunnyvale 5, Gunter 3

SUNNYVALE — Kelsey Nelson had two hits and scored twice in Gunter’s district loss against Sunnyvale.

Yessica Ovalle had two hits and an RBI, Kaylee Schmitz scored and Megan Bullard and Christy Watson chipped in hits for Gunter (6-18, 1-10).

District 14-A Dodd City 15, Savoy 0 (3)

DODD CITY — Jenna Wallace threw three innings of no-hit ball, striking out five, and had two hits and scored twice as Dodd City run-ruled Savoy.

Logan Rencher went 3-for-3 and scored two runs for Dodd City (20-7, 8-1), which remained in a first-place tie with Trenton going into the regular-season finale at Honey Grove on Thursday.

Trenton 16, Honey Grove 0 (4)

TRENTON — Shanna Bennett tripled and drove in four runs as Trenton run-ruled Honey Grove.

Jordan Withrow struck out eight and allowed just one hits, Jessica Picou was 2-for-2 and walked twice, Corey Picou tripled and had two RBI and Kellie Connelly was 2-for-3 and drove in a run for Trenton (16-13, 8-1), which remains in a first-place tie with Dodd City going into the regular-season finale at Ector on Friday.

District 15-A Blue Ridge 17, Wolfe City 3 (5)

WOLFE CITY — Blue Ridge pulled away with 13 runs in the final two innings of a win.

Kinzie Garcia and Paige Albert led Blue Ridge, each going 3-for-4 with four RBI for the first-place Lady Tigers, who host Bland at 6 p.m. om Friday.

Savannah Richardson went 3-for-3 and scored once for Wolfe City (13-14, 5-4), which plays at Campbell on Friday.
